Scierie aux environs de Paris by Henri Rousseau shows a sawmill on the outskirts of Paris, surrounded by green fields, trees, and winding country roads. Pale buildings with red roofs sit among the greenery, while a large mill wheel and stacked timber hint at the working landscape. In the distance, a tall industrial tower rises above the trees, bringing a touch of the city into an otherwise rural view. Rousseau fills the scene with small details, from the two figures walking near the road to the bright red berries on the tree at right, giving the painting a charming mix of countryside and early industrial Paris.

Henri Rousseau was a self-taught French painter born in 1844 and is best known for his imaginative landscapes and jungle paintings. His work often drew from everyday Parisian surroundings as well as his own imagination, turning ordinary parks, roads, factories, and city edges into scenes with a distinctly personal character.
