The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau shows a sleeping traveler resting under a full moon, with a lion standing beside her in the desert. Her striped robe brings bands of red, green, yellow, and blue into the dark landscape, while a mandolin and water jug sit close by on the ground. The lion leans in with wide, alert eyes, creating a strange and unforgettable moment between the sleeping figure and the animal. 

Henri Rousseau was a self-taught French painter born in 1844 and is best known for his imaginative landscapes and jungle paintings. He built many of his most memorable worlds from his own imagination, drawing additional inspiration from Paris botanical gardens, illustrated books, popular journals, and the animals and plants he encountered in museums and zoos.

This artwork has been carefully restored from the original 1897 painting and is available as a museum-quality reproduction fine art print, with the option to add a real wood frame crafted by our artisan framers.
